The Dimensity 9600M looks like MediaTek’s way of keeping flagship-level performance available without pushing every premium phone to the more expensive 2nm Dimensity 9600 Pro. It uses TSMC’s 3nm process and is aimed at a broader range of high-end phones, giving brands another option between upper-midrange chips and the very top flagship tier. MediaTek officially positions it as part of its flagship 5G family, with premium gaming, imaging, AI and connectivity features.
That means the 9600M makes the most sense for premium and more affordable flagship phones rather than the most expensive Pro or Ultra models. It keeps an all-big-core CPU, Mali-G1 Ultra MC12 GPU, NPU 990, LPDDR5X memory, UFS 4.1, Wi-Fi 7 and support for high-refresh displays and advanced cameras. Reports currently point to phones such as the standard Vivo X500 using the 9600M, while higher-end models move to the 9600 Pro.
So why choose this over the older Dimensity 9500? The hardware is actually very similar: the 9600M keeps the same 3nm process, CPU layout, GPU and NPU found in the 9500. The difference is mainly in newer software and AI features inherited from MediaTek’s latest platform, including updated agentic AI support and scheduling improvements. In other words, the 9600M is less about a huge performance jump and more about giving 2026 premium phones an updated version of proven flagship hardware without requiring the cost and power targets of the 9600 Pro.
